OK, where should I begin ….. the review of the Military Contractor’s Hand Book or the Giveaway…. My thoughts first.  :)

Derek Miller Author “Military Contractor’s Handbook”

The Military Contactor’s Hanbook by Derek Miller was a hit for me.  I have to say, Derek is my friend, but I promised to give an honest review.  I can really assure you that the review will be honest because I can relate to everything & I mean EVERYTHING in the book.  I read every page.  Some of what Derek said made me laugh, some made me reflect and some of it actually made me cry.

After reading it your thought may be that what he wrote could not all have happen to one guy.  I’m here to tell you that every military contractor here has a long story.  Many of those stories no one will every here in the states.  That is because it is kind of an unsaid rule that bad things are nothing to brag about or worry your family with it.  It is the “What happens in Afghanistan stays in Afghanistan” thing.

So with that said, on to my Review of the Military Contractor’s Handbook….

It is just as the name implies.  If you are considering applying for and making a temporary career, and it is temporary, working overseas in this harsh environment, then this is definitely the book for you.

Derek does not sugar coat what you need to do before you consider applying, what you need to do after you apply, what needs to be done if you are lucky enough to get an offer and what to expect.

It is not easy to land an overseas job and believe me it ain’t glamorous for any of us.  AND it does take an emotional toll on your heart at all levels over time.  At the same time as Derek put it, it can be a job that can drag your broke ass out of debt and change your standard of living.

The book is a very simple, easy, short read.  I don’t want to leave out that it is also very entertaining.  Derek is a very funny guy and he is also very thoughtful and professional.  If you read the Military Contractor’s Handbook you WILL have a much better chance of landing that not so glamorous dream job.  Well maybe not dream job, but a great job none the less. I failed to mention Derek has tons of human resources experience and knows what he is talking about.

If you just want to get some idea of what it means to be a military contractor or read about life as a contractor overseas in a war zone this is a great book to start with.
