Running Motivation & Accountablity on Wednesday Rewind

Running Motivation
Race 3 NTC 5K Series 2012

Running motivation is deep in my soul.  On most days anyway. :)

I love looking back in the past for Wednesday Rewind.  It gives me a clear understanding of how far I’ve come.  This was actually a post from last year this time.

I decided to pull it out of the Fantabulous Day Blog vault.  That was the blog name back in the day. :)  This gives me running motivation like nothing else.

Back before my 1/2 Marathon, I wrote…..

I have eyes on other running blogs and I also listen to several running podcast.  There I can find lots of running motivation.  Since one of my goals with this blog is to inspire others, I thought I would start posting my training for the week.

I do post my runs on my 1/2 at 6000 ft page (currently removed), but I wanted to also post a quick update weekly on the home page.

This is just another way for me to hold myself accountable and to also, hopefully, inspire others to get moving.

I write on this blog for accountability reasons as well.  I always say “If you say it out loud, then you have to follow through”.  :) Writing in a journal is one thing, but blogging is taking journalizing to a greater level.  I’m sure all bloggers would agree.

I’ve been know to start things and then get demotivated, but this time I’ve committed to the Disney 1/2 marathon and I’m all in, mind, body, and soul.  I already paid my hefty entrance fee and am really looking forward to doing the run.

Running Motivation
After lunch time run.

Any who…. here is my week in review:

My main goals I accomplished for this week:

15 miles, the goal was 20.9 mile.

Long run was 6+, the goal was 7+.  I am OK with this 6+  That was darn good for me.

That’s great running motivation for me.  Don’t you agree?

My focus was on form and running longer.  I had been running for 30 mins at lunch and I have extended that to 40 mins.  I have been going a bit slow, but I can usually get in about 3 miles at a time, which is good.

Another week down and one week closer to January 13th.

Running Motivation
I had only run a couple of miles so I was feeling pretty good. Had to get the photo op in with my signature peace signs.

This was written in August of 2012.  Now look at me.  The Disney 1/2 Marathon is well under my belt and I’ve other race events in my sights.  You can check out how I did from my Disney 1/2 marathon race report.  Don’t kill yourself laughing.  If I can run Disney anybody can.

Now thats running motivation for ya!

FD247 – Is a Recharge in Order? 8 Ways…Wednesday Rewind

Wednesday Rewind, Recharge

Recharge  is the word for today and it is Wednesday Rewind day in Liz’s world.  Last year I was just getting to know my new work family and getting adjusted to my new job then.  One complete year later I am still employed with the same company and loving those very same people.

Wednesday Rewind, Recharge
Air Travel is a personal energy drainer.

Although I had just gotten to Afghanistan, I had to travel from Florida to Indiana (Stayed for a week), then on to Qatar (stayed for a week), next stop Dubai (two day layover thanks to closed airport in Kabul) & finally last stop, Kabul Green Village.

That’s a lot of traveling and a tremendous amount of jet lag.  Not to mention that I had to get right to work.  So it didn’t take long for me to realize I needed a mental break to ease into things.

Now I am use to working extremely long hours with no days off.  The job that I am on requires that all employees take one full day off.  Even on those days I find myself wanting to go to work.  I made a conscious decision not to.  I am going to use that time to recharge. (Unfortunately, I have to work on my day off this week) That has not happen in a year, so I guess I will live….maybe….I don’t know….we will see.

Fridays are my recharge day.  What can you do to recharge?  Well here are some things I do to recharge:

  • Listen to some good music (LOUD).  I must admit, I love loud music.
  • Sleep in.  For me that is maybe an extra hour.
  • Really give your hair some care.  I do my own hair and it is pretty low maintenance because it is natural.
  • Drag yourself to the gym for a half hour or so of torture.   You could just go for a nice leisurely walk.
  • Have lunch with some friends and engage in some thought provoking conversations.  I make it a point to leave work at work when it comes to meals.
  • I use my time to organize my quarters or rearrange the few pieces of furniture that I have.
  • Watch some good TV shows.  I love watching decorating shows.  It is so inspiring.
  • Take the time to pamper yourself.  I love taking long baths and polishing my nails.  Remember I am a lotus blossom.
Wednesday Rewind, Recharge
I love taking Baths. They are so relaxing.

You could even use Wednesday Rewind to use as a recharge day in the middle of a hectic week.  Any who that is just a few things I do to recharge.  What do you do?  This is what works for me, you can try it, it just might work for you.

FD243 – Never Let Um See You Sweat..Yeah Right, Wednesday Rewind

Liz-main-character.png I haven’t done a Wednesday Rewind in awhile.  I also haven’t been blogging as much as I use to. That’s because I have allocated my time differently.  That sounds so organized doesn’t it.  Well, not really.  The bottom line is I just don’t have time for blogging as much because I am working out a lot more.

That is always a good thing.  You know last year this time, I was really not blogging that much at all.  I was thinking about it, but not really.  The same holds true for my fitness.  I was thinking about exercise but there was nothing going on in the movement area of my life.

Have you ever just watched a workout video and maybe had a snack while you watched.  :( I ain’t ashamed to say I have, but I should be.  That is kind of how things were going in Feb 2011.  I was still finding my way here in Afghanistan on my then new job.

Anyway I had a draft of a post this time last year, surprisingly.  It was a pretty crappy draft to the LizForADay standards.  I suppose that is why it didn’t make the cut.  I don’t think I would have subscribed to my blog either if I read that.  Any who the title was “Never Let Um See You Sweat”.

Running Trackers
Not that’s sweat.

It is actually not about fitness, but women in the workplace.  I don’t want to talk about that.  When referring to sweat, it is much more fun to talk about my workouts. So instead of tell you what I didn’t do, which I already done, I will tell you about my current workouts.

I’m still on fire.  I think I have been successful so far because I have been varying what I do.  They say variety is the spice of life.  I have a really good mix of cardio, XT (Cross Training), Yoga & Weights.  With my way of thinking, I really can’t lose.  If I miss a workout, I am not going to beat myself up.  I actually feel stronger.

Stay tuned on Friday, because I will be sharing my workouts on Fridays from now on.  I also found a virtual race, but that is a whole nother post.  So stay tuned for that one.

Well that’s the end of my look back to nothingness.  I was not doing anything interesting this time last year.  I was probably eating though. :)

FD221 – Reminiscing Challenge for Wednesday Rewind

First good snow fall.

Reminiscing is what I felt like for this Wednesday rewind. For some reason Christmas & snow really takes me back to my childhood.  I always seem to remember things that I hadn’t thought of in years.  As kids my brothers and I really enjoyed playing outside in the fresh winter snow.

It always seemed so peaceful and special when it was actually snowing.  Also for me it always seem so quite when it was snowing.  I don’t why. I would sometimes just stand in the snow & it seems like I could hear each snow flake when it hit the ground.  I guess even then as a child I understood what peace was.

I’m total obsessed with snow this year.

We, my brothers & I,  would always make up some kind of imaginative adventure that we would be going on.  We didn’t need to take anything with us, we would just go.  I grew up in an area where there were freight trains also.  Of course being the bad kids that we were, we were always playing on the railroad tracks.  Keep in mind these were extremely active railroad tracks.  My parents would have beat us down if they would’ve know how much we were on them. I don’t know, those tacks had such an appealing draw for us.

Thats us. The dynamic trio. I’m the baby of course. Maybe that is why I’m so silly.

Those are my brothers.  We really are pretty close.  We grew up together up north were it seemed to be winter for most of the year.  I guess that is why snow is such a trigger for me when it comes to thinking of the past.  We had a great childhood.  It was normal, it was fun and it was memorable.  I love my family.  When I moved to Florida, those jokers followed me.  So now we all live close again.  There was a time when I had not seen my oldest brother for 7 years.  Now when I am home I see him almost everyday.  My parents are still up north, but that may change.  :)

The night time snow fall is so tranquil. My iPhone camera is not that great.

I am not really a snow person.  Yes I grew up in it, yes it is very pretty, but I don’t like the cold that goes along with it.  However I love the memories.  So for this reminiscing Wednesday rewind, I just want to give my brothers a shout out.  Y’all are all right with me. :)  And I say that with Luv!  😛

FD215 – Wednesday Rewind & Reflections

Wednesday Rewind
The cutest kid in the world.

Wednesday Rewind is here again. I didn’t post yesterday, because I was exhausted.  I haven’t even read any blogs in 3 days.  My work is sucking the life out of me.  I’ve been playing catchup from my vacation, which I don’t regret a bit.  I expected it to be a mess, but it was worse that I thought it would be.  Unfortunately, work is work.  I am happy to have work no matter how messy it is.  Thank God help is on the way.  My dear friend Miguel is coming to work with me permanently.  He will be here tomorrow. YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! :) Can you tell I’m very happy about that.

Wednesday Rewind
Miguel is the guy on the left.

I can’t tell you how nice it is to work with someone you know, love & is totally competent at their jobs.  I had an Afghan worker working with me, but his work was sub-par and I could not re-contract him.  Afghan workers have little to no work ethics.  Unfortunatly it is hard for them to keep up with the fast work pace that American companies have.  Don’t get me wrong, he was a very nice person, just in the wrong job.  Business is business.  We are still friends.

Wednesday Rewind
Me & my baby.

Anyway… I wanted to make sure I chimed in for Wednsday Rewind.  This is one of my favorite post days.  I love reflecting on what was happening last year.  This time last year I was home celebrating my grandson’s birthday.  Yes, I have a grandson.  He is the sweetest child anyone could wish to have.  He behaves, he is polite, and he even lets you know when he is ready for bed, which is usually very early.  The boy likes to get his sleep. I don’t blame him. :)

Wednesday Rewind
Such a handsome guy.

I was overseas when he was born, but my family always sent me lots of pictures so I could keep up with his milestones.  We didn’t have a big birthday bash last year.  We just had some cake and ice cream, open some presents and I played with the kids.  I love playing with the kids.  Probably because I’m just a big kid at heart. Sometimes I just watch him play.  I miss my children.

Wednesday Rewind
Miguel at Green Village

Last but not least….I want to welcome back my buddy to Green Village.  Cause I really need ya.  :) As a matter of fact we have worked together in the past also.  So there will be no surprises.  See ya when you get here buddy.   😛

Wednesday Rewind & Refections Questions:

What were you doing this time last year?

Where you celebrating any December birthdays?

FD209 – Enjoying Life……Wednesday Rewind Challenge

Enjoying Life
You can’t help but to enjoy your babies. They really make life fun.

I was enjoying life this time last year.  Yeah, Wednesday Rewind is back. This is the day of the week when we take a look back at what we were doing this time last year.  It is always a great idea to see where you have been.  If you never look back, how can you ever know if you are moving forward.

I wanted to make Wednesday Rewind a Challenge for all you readers out there in the blogosphere.  Take a look at your life last year on this date.  What was life like for you.  What things were you happy about & what things would you change.  Remember part of being positive is embracing life and making yourself a better person than you were yesterday.

I figured out a long time ago that it is the small things in life that make me happy. I was not working this time of year.  I really would not have considered myself unemployed, just in between jobs.  I had a job offer a that time, but I was not due to start until the end of January.  That was perfectly alright with me, because I have spent years working overseas & was only able to be home for a few days at a time.  Believe me, I was definitely enjoying life.  I actually did not have any blog post for December of last year.  😳 But I remember what I was doing. :)

Enjoying Life
Pies in the oven.

I love to cook.  I couldn’t make delicious pies unless I was in my own kitchen.  The house smelled so good.  The smells said to me “Now you are enjoying life!”

Enjoying Life
My new ride. Well it was new last year.

I know enjoying life really should not include material things, but I was really enjoying driving my very own car.  I did not my own car for years because I didn’t need one.  Since I am a green person the Prius was my car of choice.  It was better than I expected.  I can say part of enjoying life is being able to afford things.  I am blessed than I was able to actually purchase a car in the first place.

Enjoying Life
Lakeridge Winery

I never knew there was a winery in my area.  It was like finding gold.  I love wine.  Every time I opened a bottle of local wine it said “You are enjoying life!”  OK maybe not, but after a few sips I could have sworn it did.  :)

Enjoying Life
I love to decorate.

Now keep in mind, I am not saying I love purchasing things to decorate.  I am just saying I love to decorate.  I don’t like spending money.  It makes me feel good to have my surrounding around me looking good & clean.  Disorganization means chaos.  Part of enjoying life for me is to have things in good order.

Just came out of the movies.
Can’t really explain what was going on with the kwoff, but i was happy.

I am definitely a movie theater person.  I love, love, love going to the show.  Since I was not working, I could go pretty much whenever I wanted to.  That is part of enjoying life for me.

My son also works in Afghanistan, and was home on leave.  I really miss my children, so any time I get to spend with them equals enjoying life. I also enjoy the time I spend with my daughter and her son.  I have such beautiful children.  They are not only beautiful on the outside, but they both have good hearts.  That is truly a blessing.

FD175 – Wednesday Rewind – FD63 – Performing at Your Best Till the End

Time for a look back to see what was going through my mind last year on this date.  Well performing at your best was the topic.  This could really be the focus for anything that we do.  So here we go……..

FD63 – Performing at Your Best Till the End

Performing at Your Best

I have been thinking about what performing at your best really means. The reason?  Well, the time has come and  I will be leaving my current company and moving on to bigger and better endeavors.  I have had a good time here in sunny Iraq and Afghanistan.  I have also met some absolutely amazing people.  I wish I could put all my friends in my pocket and take them with me where ever I go.

I still have a little less than a week left and my enthusiasm to complete task is rather lacking.  I really don’t want to be one of those people that say they are leaving in a month, when in reality their mind is already gone and they become worthless to the company. Is that performing at your best till the end? I think not.

I do believe it is important to give your best effort to your current projects up to the very end.  I don’t want to be that employee that leaves a bunch of crap for those that are left behind.

Wanting to perform at my best till the end is the only motivating factor that helps.  Remember I am striving to be a better person today than I was yesterday.  Plus it is a small world.  You never know who you will be working with again in the future.  I have in the past had to go back to a job I quit.  I didn’t burn any bridges so it was an easy decision for that company to hire me back.

This is what is important to me.  If you are in this situation you may want to consider how important your exit will be.  Are you performing at your best? I can answer that question with a yes. :)

Wish me luck on my new path.

FD #166 – Wednesday Rewind – Making Plans for the Future, Lego Land & Hershey Factory

Making Plans Liz & Ismael
Enjoying the Good Life

I had to really think about what I was doing last year at this time.  I didn’t have a post for this day last year.  I actually went for months, only posting here and there during the long jobless winter months.  It could be because it was a time of uncertainty.  For some people that uncertainty amounts to fear, but I must admit I was never afraid. Making plans should  have been my focus.

I was still in Kurkuk, Iraq and I already knew my company’s contract was at an end.  There were many others who had already gotten the per verbal pink slip and others who knew that their days were numbered.  At that time we had an exact end date for the government contract, but not all would make it to the very end. They were going crazy instead of making plans to get back to the real world.

As the numbers dwindled and people left to go back home I knew I needed a plan.  In fact I knew I should have been making plans ahead of time.  Well I  didn’t really have a plan.  Keep in mind that I had already been made a job offer with another company (my current one) but there was still a lot to be done before I knew for sure this job would be mines.  In fact it took 4 months for me to finally get to Qatar for my first days at work.

Essentially I was out of work for 4 months which is a long time.  The whole time I still did not have a plan and really was not worried about making plans at all.  What could I have been done better?  I really don’t know.  I am not a super big spender and I had been saving for a rainy day.  However, Rainy day funds go pretty fast when you are without cash flow.  That is for sure. Sometimes all you can do is all you can do.

My plan for the future is to go live with my mother or my children if I can’t make it on my own.  They love me so much that they better will not hesitate to take me in.  I am sure of that.  :)  Seriously, I still don’t know what my plan would be for the future.  I do know that I really don’t want to work in a cubby ever again.  So I’m going to have to think of something.  Although I don’t know when this job, will end, I do know it will end eventually.

Last year at this time when most were worried and couldn’t figure out how they were going to make it, I was feeling the opposite.  I was ready to go home and be with my family for as long as I could.  I missed being in states and enjoying all the things that people take for granted everyday. I have been working over here now for a long 7 years.  It is a job and mamas got to feed the babies.  The plan is to devise a plan.  :)  Wish me luck.

FD159 Wednesday Rewind #59 – It’s OK to Say No ….

It has to be a coninkadink that the number for today’s post is 159 and the one last year is 59.  Whod-a-Knewd.  Last week was the same.  What makes it so freaky is that I assign the  number for each Fantabulous day entry by the actual post and it has nothing to do with the days.  As a matter of fact I went for a few months only posting off and on while keeping the numbers consistent or should I say continuous.  I hope all that math stuff is not getting you down.  Anyway…here is the Wednesday Rewind…

Fantabulous Day #59 – It is Ok to Say No…

Recently I moved to a new Camp located in Kurkuk Iraq.  I  now have to travel about 1 mile to get to the dining facility.  That is a not a bad thing when it is not 115 degrees outside.  Thank goodness the weather is starting to cool off.

So in an attempt to get in some extra exercise, I have been walking to get my food.  The problem is everyone wants to give me a ride.  It is very hard to say no thank you, but I have been holding fast.

The easy way is not always the best way.  No takes on a new meaning when you just want to get there and be at the end of your trek.  I have been doing good though.  I really enjoy my walks and it gives me time to think and get out of the office.

I think I will continue t say no, for now.

Your Lurvly Lotus Lizzy

I remember those days like they were yesterday and I assure you they were not strangers.  Maybe a few were, but is was OK.  :)  Unfortunately, now,  it takes me 1 min to get to work from my living quarters and it takes about 5 mins to go to the dining facility.  Not much walking going on here.  Oh well.  Guess I will be treadmilling it or walking in loops to get my exercise.

You know the question…What were you doing a year ago?

Would you do it over again?

FD154 Wednesday Rewind #54 – Recognize Your Fan Club

I decided to try something different.  I wanted to take a look back to see what I was doing last year at this time.  Blogs are an amazing way to take a snap shot in time.  At this time last year, my blog was still in its infancy and my words were a little dry.  Don’t get me wrong, I have always had good stuff to share.  So here we go…this is what I posted 9/24/2011.  (My Exact Post) Start…..

I thought the title for today’s post was so appropriate.  I was walking down the street at my new site here in sunny Kurkuk, Iraq.  Don’t worry I am on a military installation.  Also keep in mind that I only got to this site a couple of days ago.  Back to the story.  There were people stopping me and yelling out of cars at me.  These were people that I have met over the years in different places.  Some of them I met in Afghanistan.  As I was walking yesterday and this happened, I said to myself  “there is another one of my fans”.

I only said it to myself, but I also thought to myself how conceded that would have seem to someone if I had said it out loud.  As I walked on, I recognized that there are so many people around me that support me in different ways.  There are my family that help with the things I need done at home and support my decision to work here overseas.  There are the people I work with that support me by being loyal and working hard so WE look good.  Then there are just the ordinary, extraordinary people that I meet everyday.

There is a fan club out there for everyone.  You have one even if you don’t know it.  Take a minute to think about it.

You will be surprised!

Activity I did today:  Walk Run to the Gym.  Treadmill Day.
How Motivate am I:  Extremely motivated
Overall Mood:      Fantabulous Mood

I would love to hear what you were doing a year ago on for this Wednesday Rewind. Go ahead lets hear it.  :)
