FD262 – Waking in California | Daily Prompt: Feed Your Senses

Every now and then I like to take on a challenge from The Daily Post.  The topic is feed your senses.  This one seem particularly interesting.  I was still in sunny California for my cousin’s graduation from San Diego University.  So Cool!  I don’t have a degree, but I wish I did.  Sometimes.  :)  I haven’t written anything about my journey to California, so here is a tidbit.

Waking Senses

Any who back to the challenge……… which was……

Daily Prompt: Feed Your Senses

by michelle w. on May 18, 2013

Write down the first sight, sound, smell, and sensation you experienced on waking up today. Pick the one you’re most drawn to, and write. (For a bigger challenge, pick the one you’re leastdrawn to.)

Photographers, show us one of the five senses — bonus points for depicting a smell!

Feed Your Senses
How many people wake up to the computer.

It is not unusual for me to wake up to the sight of my computer screen.  I don’t do it as much as I use to, but I still sleep with my computer in the bed sometimes.  I really do it a lot when I’m visiting people.  That is really the only time I get a chance to go on line.  That is my alone time and I don’t have to be worried about being rude.

Feed Your Senses
Can you smell the sea water?

Can you smell the sea water when you look at the picture?  Well me either.  :)  We are a bit inland, but the air is pretty smog free here. There are always nice breezes and the air is nice and crisp in the morning.

Last, but not least is the sounds.  I love the sound of wind chimes and that’s what I hear in the mornings hear in sunny California.  It has such a smooth and peaceful sound.  I could meditate with wind chimes. They are hanging out back on the party patio. Feed your senses is such a good topic.

That gives you a little taste of my recent trip, but I will be posting more for sure.

Your Lurvly Lotus Lizzy :)

Feed Your Senses Questions:

What do you sense when you wake up in the morning?

Do you need some coffee first to figure that out? :)

FD251- Zippy Doo Da….1st Stop Washington DC & DCLofty Review

DC Lofty Review coming up…..But first…

DC Lofty Review
This is the coat that I borough so I would not freeze to death.

Some would say home is where you hang your hat and that has been true for many years for me.  While working overseas, I was able to go on some fantastic trips and meet some amazing people.  Now I’m back in the Good Ole USA.  I love being a US citizen.  The US is the best country to live in.  I mean no disrespect to any other countries.  That is just where my heart is.

I started my journey away from that harsh country where people are still pulling wagons and the poor people are still struggling to have some sybolence on an economy a couple of days ago.  I wish the best for them.  I have made some good life long friends, but I can’t say that I will really miss this place.

I took my last trip to the Kabul airport and I can say see ya suckers to that damn crazy ass security.  I only had a couple of hours in Dubai so I  stayed in the airport until my last flight.  I was actually in Dubai for 7 days last week, but didn’t blog because the internet connection at my hotel was horrible.

DCLofty Review……

I wanted to stop and see some friends on my way home.  Of course since I’m unemployed I wanted to do that on the cheap. So I decided to stay at a Hostel & I would like to give DCLofty review which is where I stayed.  What is a hostel you say?

hos·tel

/ˈhästl/

Noun
An establishment that provides cheap food and lodging for a specific group of people, such as students, workers, or travelers.
Synonyms
inn – dormitory

That definition courtesy of Google Search.  Cheap is just what I was looking for.  I booked my room on Booking.com which I love to use.  BTW you can view a DCLofty review or two there.  I have never stayed in one, but I have lived in a varied amount of different living conditions over the years.  So I know how to slum if I had to, which I didn’t.  The name of the place is DCLofty in downtown Washington DC.

I actually was able to take a bus and the metro to get there.  The desk clerk gave me very good directions to get there. Even with my big bag which I named Steve after a good friend, I was able to get there with no issues.  Once I got there I was a bit worried.  The place look a little worn, but still not to bad at all. At that time I did not know what type of DCLofty Review I was going to write.

DCLofty Review
Leave Shoes at Door

You are asked to take your shoes off at the door, but they will give you slippers for a small fee of $1 if you stay for more than 3 nights.  The first room I was put in was an 8 man coed room.  But a bed in an all female room became available and so I was moved.  This room was better and there was only 4 beds.  The bathroom was also right off of this room which was nice. DCLofty Review looking good at this point.

As you can see from the pictures the facilities were not bad at all.  In short:

  • You get a clean, comfortable bed
  • Your towels & soap is provided if you need it.
  • You can lock up your own valuables but you need to have your own lock. I got mine from a store up the street for a mere 3 bucks.
  • The entrance to all rooms have chipher locks and there are no guest allowed in rooms. The entrance to the building is also chipher locked.
  • The water pressure is good and warm, not hot. Not an issue for 2 nights.
  • It would be great to pack light, which I didn’t because this was not my original destination. You may need to go up or down narrow, long stairways.
  • There is a kitchen with clean dishes for use.
  • Coffee and snacks are provided in the kitchen.
  • There is free wifi and it works great in the rooms.
  • There is a common area where you can use 1 of 3 computers provided if you choose.  Or you can lounge in and do nothing in the sitting area.
  • It was warm and I didn’t spot any bugs or critters.
  • Oh my stay cost me a whopping $89 for 2 1/2 days.  It would have been cheaper, but I need some place to stay until my buddy picked me up on the last day.  You can beat that with a stick.
  • The only con was they have 2 buildings that you can only access from outside.  One building has the kitchen and the other has the other common areas.  I just hung out in the kitchen with my computer.
  • Staff was extremely friendly.

All in all it is a great place to stay if you don’t mind meeting people and saving money. My first Hostel experience was fantastic and I would do it again. End of DCLofty review.  :) BTW I did some bad reviews for this property and didn’t understand why.  Really this is not suppose to be a 4 star hotel.  You do get what you pay for.

My 1st full day in Washington DC…..

DCLofty Review
This is one of my favoritist persons in the world, TK

I pretty much did nothing, but relax for most of the day.  I had the room to myself most of the day.  Then my friend TK & hubby came and scooped me up.  We went to Washington DC Harbor for Dinner and a walk around.  We chatted up a storm and enjoy each others company.  I have know TK since I was 18 years old.  She is one of my buddies from my first duty station when I was in the US Army stationed in Frankfurt Germany.  See is so awesome and still looks the same. I love here dearly.

Here are some more photos of the day for your enjoyment.. :)

I will end here, but will be back soon.

FD250 – I Luv My Mexicans..Really I do

Yes that’s right I love my Mexicans.  But huh?……

You know hand sanitizer really takes on that lava lamp effect if you hold pretty lights behind it.  Well I think I was high on the fact that I was on my way home.  I rally don’t plan on looking back.  It really was time for me to move on.  I just was not able to do my best with the resources I had, which makes me sad.  OH well…On to the Mexicans.

Mexican
Miguel & Mr Fruit Man

I’m really gonna miss this Mexican.  Miguel don’t worry, I coming to your house when you quit too.  :)  Miguel is one of my besties that is for sure and boy do I have a lot of friends like that.  I am so blessed.  I didn’t get pictures of everyone, but I tried. I learn some spanish from Miguel which I have been dying to learn.  I’m going to miss eavesdropping on him and his wife.  They always spoke spanish so you know I was really trying to learn then.  :)  Love ya Miguel.   I’m so nosey.  :)

Mexican
Violent Mexican

Now that there is how the Mexicans really roll.  Angel offered to help me open some boxes of cookies that Teresa from “Can’t Stay Out of the Kitchen” sent.  Those cookies went so fast.  Loved them T.  Check out her blog, she is an amazing cook.

Let me tell you, you can’t beat  Corona.  I love them.  Viva Mexico!

Mexican
You can beat Mexican food.

Can you say I Luv, Luv, Luv Mexican food.  I think I almost look mexican now.  OK, maybe not.  OH Well……

I would love to be with my kids on a beach somewhere.
I would love to be with my kids on a beach somewhere.

As a matter fact my first real vacation was in Mexico with my children. That’s enough with Mexican rant.

Peace Out Y’all!

FD 249 – Panties are So Overrated!

Made Ya Look! Ha Ha…No panties here, but there is a story.

Panties
Ha, Ha!

Ok, if any of you are watching me on Facebook you will see that the time has finally come.  I have resigned my position here in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Yeah for me! :)  This job was just getting too crazy.   I was expected to make wine from scratch, using one foot to squish 2 grapes and make a whole bottle, all that while chewing bubble gum, patting my head and jumping up and down.  Sounds like the definition of chaos doesn’t it.   On a positive note I will say that I have met a ton of great people and will miss them dearly.

It has been seriously quite on LizForADay, because my work was killing me.  I could not bear to look at my computer screen in the evening when I got off.  I know once I finally get out of here my mind will be free.  I just want to go, but my flight doesn’t leave until tomorrow.  That’s a bummer.

My boss really expects me to keep working after I told him I quit.  What a crock of shit. (Sorry for the foul language)  I will wash my mouth out with soap later.  That is only if the ingredients are all natural of course.  You really are trapped here until they let you out.

Any who, back to the Panties thing.  When I packed all my stuff, I made a conscious decision to not take any old underwear or socks with me.  So basically as I wear them, I am tossing them.  That may sound strange, but who whats to start the next chapter in their lives like that, basically with ragged stuff.  Not me! The people who will be in danger is the garbage pickers.  :)  Ha!  Even I had to laugh at that.  :)

Consider that a travel tip! Don’t say you never got anything out of reading my crazy post. :)

Tonight I will be having diner with some of my work family as a final farewell.  I wish I could go up to the posers and tell them not to pretend with me and begone. Those are the folks that say they really hate to see you leave, but are secretly sharpening the knives to take you out when you go down a dark alley.  Dark alley, because the are cowards and they don’t want anyone to see them.  (Sorry for the Rant)  Unfortunately, my mom taught me to be nice and when I talk about my work family I’m not talking about them.  Those Dirty Dogs!  (Sorry…..Let it go Lizzy….Let it Go!)

So I’m off to have a little adventure before heading home and I will let you all know how things turn out.

FD248 – Daily Prompt | Places… Post Excerpts & Life Excerpts…Anywhere but Here!

Post Excerpts
I would love to be eating fresh fruit from Thailand.

I have been on the hunt to make a change to the landing/home page.  I wanted it to have post excerpts of each post and not show the whole post.  I also wanted it to show an image as well.  I love posting pictures on LizForADay.  I also love going to blogs that post lots of personal pictures.  It simply adds fantastic personality.

I ran across the code that promised to give me what I desired in a home page.  Yeah Post Excerpts! :) I know it does not take much to make me happy.  Unfortunately I didn’t write down the site that I got the code from.  I always like to give credit, where credit is due.  I’m afraid I have failed this time….BUT I did want to pass that code on if anyone wants to do the same.

All you need to do is to put the post excerpts code in the functions.php of your theme and voila you’re done.  The code will be at the very end of the post if you want it.

Post Excerpts
I would love to be with my kids on a beach somewhere.

OK I guess you’re asking yourself, what the heck do your pictures have to do with updating your home page.  EXCERPTS silly!  :)  I am having flash back of places I would love to be instead of here.  So I decided to post some excerpts from some fantastic places that I have been.

Post Excerpts
Yoga’s Mom in Bali. I love meeting great people.

By the way I gave the lady in the picture the sarong and she commence to wearing it everyday.  She was so sweet.  Sometimes going places is all about the people you meet.

Post Excerpts
My daughter & I driving a boat.

Sometimes it is about the things you get to do.  I was very happy.  It was 9 am, I was in Mexico, on my families very first vacation and I already had about 3 Mexican beers.  Can you say that is definitely a place that I would love to be?

Post Excerpts
Me in Venice at San Paulo Square. I would love to be riding on a gondola right now.

I’ve been blessed enough to have gone to some fantastic places and taken some incredible pictures.  When I look at the pictures I feel like I am back in those places.  I love sharing those moments.  You would kill me if I posted every picture I took.

Post Excerpts
Yeap that is me and a Shark. I think the shark was drugged.

You know I would love to be somewhere else doing crazy things.  And nope I’m not that crazy…ok maybe a little.  I wish I as an adrenaline junkie, but I’m not really.  I do however love to sightsee.  That is my favorite thing to do when I go somewhere.

Post Excerpts
I would love to be speculating over the ruins.

Looking back at the past always makes me contemplate about my modern life.  I just feel so  blessed when I go to places like that.  Oh I was in Athens in the above picture.  I was also loving day dreaming about what it must of been like during the days when this old city was thriving.

Post Excerpts
I would love to be at Victoria falls checking out the sites.

There is something majestic about natural wonders.  I was loving life on my grand vacation to Victoria Falls in Africa.  Not many Americans get to see this site.  I feel so houdy toudy sometimes.  :)

Post Excerpts
I would love to be on the beach during the sunset.

Yeap that’s me on the beach at Boracay Island in the Philippines.  Who wouldn’t want to see a site like that.  I didn’t know God made the sky so many different beautiful colors.  I did not Photoshop the photo, I promise. :)

Post Excerpts
I would love to be viewing the amazing country side of Cape Town from the top of Table Top Mountain in South Africa.

Believe it or not the pictures go on and on, but I will spare you from my crazy world of picture taking.

The point of this post……and there is always a point…..is , well, there is no point.  :)  I just wanted to share a way for you to incorporate excerpts in your blog and give you a view of some memorable excerpts from my life.  I hope you enjoyed.

I’m sure you will agree that the life excerpts are much more interesting than the post excerpts.

Your Blessed & Sharing Lizzy :)

Post Excerpts & Life Excerpts questions:

What is a favorite excerpt you would like to share?

FD233 – Long Road Home Part Tio & Silence

I’m still here.  Long Road Home is truly that.  It has been quite a few days since posted.  That’s because I have been sick, busy, running and enjoy life at home.  I miss blogging, but I just needed a short break to recharge my brain.

My original plan was to find some place to hang out instead of spending the money on a hotel room the day I was in Dubai.  I decided to stay there and I’m glad I did.  I was able to entertain myself sufficently and I saw some friends.

Long Road Home
Sharon & I in our We picture.

It is a small world in the military contracting world.  I always see someone that I have worked with before.  This is my buddy Sharon.  Sharon is not only a work buddy, but she is a neighbor at home also.  It was nice to see her.  It’s always good to keep in touch which is something I am terrible at.

Long Road Home
Economy Plus provides lots of leg room.

Anywho, I was so happy to get on the plane and get going on the long road home.  The flight was uneventful…Thank God.  The crew was was awesome and I slept most of the way.  I was still really feeling bad, so I was hoping I would not have a problem sleeping.

Long Road Home
Welcome to Orlando!

I made it to states sick but not worse for ware.  I wanted to take a picture of the Welcome to Orlando sign, but it took me forever to find it.  I couldn’t believe it was so hard to find.  The air here is so different and clean.  I love it. :)

While I was surfing some blogs I ran across this video.  You know I am enjoying YouTube right now.  When I heard the song, I thought this would be great to run with.  So I ordered the album on Amazon.  Spoiler Alert…I love it.

I have a lot to catch up on.  So CYA soon…

Loving the USA Lizzy :)

Long Road Home Question:

What says home for you?

FD232 – The Long Road Home & Rolling with the Punches

Long Road Home
Waiting for the Navy Seals to save me from the dreaded Kabul Airport.

Well today started off as a normal travel day from Afghanistan (Body Search Recap) with a gazillion body searches & weird woman staring me down.  You would have thought they were comparing me to a wanted poster that said “Dead or Alive One Million Dollars”.  You know what I did….

I rolled with the punches and ignored them, after all this is the beginning of the long road home.

I think they do that because I don’t attempt to cover my curly locks or maybe it’s that I’m African American or I am so damn beautiful or I tower over most Afghan women.  I feel like Gigantor here.  I’m really an average height for US standards. So…

I just roll with the punches and boguard my way to the front of most lines, cause they are very afraid of Gigantor.  :) The Long Road Home…The Long Road Home

This did turn out a bit different because one of my coworkers flew out also today.  His final destination will be South Africa.  It is summer time there which is right up my alley.  I wish I was going with him.  Good thing I didn’t know or I would have showed up at his door and when his wife opened the door I would have responded with “Honey We’re Home.”  wouldn’t she have been surprised. :) You know I have been there before and loved it.  (See South African Adventure)

Here is some pics for you viewing enjoyment…But keep reading, there is more.. :) (I hear the ohs and the ahs) :)

Unfortunately  he (my coworker) can’t leave the airport here so I was going to hang with him.  The issue is his flight from a different terminal.  So….

I had to roll with the punches and hang out with me, myself & I.  That is good company.  I can deal with that.  :) Remember the Long Road Home

the long road home
Patient Zero

Another thing out of the ordinary is that I have become patient zero.  I caught some kind of bug a couple of days ago.  That sucks! Who wants to be sick when you are traveling.  Well….sometimes you don’t have a choice.  I’ve been trying every little home remedies I could think off short of using leeches to suck the mucus out of my lungs.

Long Road Home
My make shift blogging station.

But….

I just had to roll with the punches  if that does not sound good.  Can’t teleport home unfortunately. Got to get better for the Long Road Home.

And so I am still sitting at the airport people watching, Facebooking, Twitting, Blogging, Drinking an ginormous amount of liquids, chatting with Miguel who is missing me terribly ( I miss you too boo!) and ignoring all my bug symptoms.

A funny thing happened on the Long Road Home….

Oh I almost forgot a funny travel story.  I was sitting alone.  I found a good spot with no people.  Then the guy walks up with his little son.  The boy was only about 4 or 5.  He was so precious, until they decided to sit next to me.  Suddenly he did not look that good any more.  I knew he was here to stay for a minute because the boy immediate took his shoes off.  Well he was nice and quite for about 2 minutes and then it was on.  I just laid my head down quitely and I guess the father, being the considerate man that he was decide to move.  They were French too.  You know how us American’s think of the French.  Just kidding.  Actually the Boy was not that bad, but I did think it was nice that the father did not what to disturb me.  In this case…

They rolled with the punches and scrammed.  :) That guy knew I was  on the Long Road Home. :)  Or maybe he figured out that I was patient zero.  Any who…..Viva Le France!

More to come on the long road home…..

Your Germy Patient Zero, Lizzy :)

Long Road Home Question:

If teleporters existed, would you get in one?

Do you feel like patient zero when you are sick?  Personally I feel like a leopard. :(

What are some home remedies you use when you have a bug?

FD228 – Travel Planning Goals are a Must

NUJA5BN9YR2Q

I was doing some travel planning and Miguel says “Man it looks like you have your whole trip planned out”.  Well I’m still working on it.  I find it good to have some travel planning goals in place before I go, but I don’t go crazy if I don’t get to do something.  It is much more fun to wing it, but it is good to have an initial list.

Gonna get me some wine and see a live band at the local winery.  You can’t go wrong when it comes to wine.

Gonna take my children to the Orlando Science Center.  That is a fun place for grownups and kids.

Gotta go to the movies.  I actually don’t know what is showing, but I plan on going as much as I can.

Gotta get my Chinese visa for my summer time trip.  Working on that one.  I really want to go to China.  I have to do this while I’m in the states.

Still need to make a doctors and dentist appointment.  I can’t come back to Afghanistan without seeing the dentist.

And I think Last but not least I need to get some new running shoes and have some blog meet ups.

I think it is going to be an exciting vacation.  I think I can say that travel planning is a good thing and is definitely in order for this trip.

Do you make plans before going on a trip or do you wing it?

Are you going anywhere special soon?

Would you consider hanging at the house a vacation?

FD226 – Orlando Vacation Around the Corner

An Orlando Vacation is something most families save their whole lives for.  I live there so I believe most of the tourist stuff is overrate.  Don’t get me wrong, I love living in Florida and it’s that time for me again.

VACATION TIME!  Yeahhhhhhhh!

I know you all are saying, dang, you just got back from wonderful Bali.  Well I waited for about 5 months to go on that vacation.  I still had time saved up.  So off I go again. Actually it was the perfect plan … that I didn’t plan.  I’m missing a lot of winter/snow days.  Oh the joy of it all.  Orlando Vacation here I come!

Bali Volcano
Bali – Have camera, will get smile.

I actually had this Orlando Vacation trip planned before the Bali trip.  I planned this Orlando Vacation around my Disney 1/2 marathon debut.  Although my training has really tanked, I still plan on going out there and having a ball. What the hay.  You walk or run 13.1 miles, it is still the same in the end.   :)

Tavel papers are in order.
Tavel papers are in order.

Before I leave I just need to tie up some loss travel ends.  I got my tickets already.  I did that  months ago.  It is damn expensive to purchase tickets from way over here at the last minute.  I don’t want to be caught in that trap.

All my old friends and current friends know I will be coming.  Don’t worry you will get to meet them all.   ;-)  Remember, have camera will blog.   :-)  I like that.

The problem that I’m having is getting hotel reservations in Dubai.  January must be busy season cause the hotel rooms are off the chain expensive.  My plan…..no hotel when I fly out of Afghanistan.  I’m going to find a way to lock my bag up and head for to the Hard Rock Cafe there.  Yeap they have one.  Dubai has everything. Unfortunately when I come back from my Orlando Vacation I must have a hotel room.  So I’m working on that one.

I plan on hanging there at the Hard Rock all day.  I will just freshen up in some public restroom.  I know…that sounds real appealing doesn’t it?   Been there, done that, no big deal.  You know US public bathrooms are a joy after being in the crazy war torn countries.

Orlando Vacation
Yeap that was taken in a public bathroom.

Dubai public bathrooms are not so bad.  But Afghanistan…All I am saying is hold whatever you got to do until you get to a real country.  That’s no joke.  Then I will head off across the big pond.  I love going that way. Heading back, not so much.  :)

So this is my warning for you….I will be posting heavily on the positive aspects of traveling on my Orlando Vacation for about a month.  Since I will be back in the good ole USA, I can also post videos on YouTube.  I’m so excited.  It’s the little things that make me happy.

FD208 – Superman Sighting in Bali…I Saw Him…Really!

Superman Sighting
I told you I saw him.

Superman sighting you say?  OK, maybe it was not a real superman sighting, but I think it was close.  :-? Yes I have more pictures from my Ubud, Bali trip.  You know how us bloggers roll. Have camera will take pictures of everything.  The limited connectivity in Bali made it difficult to post regularly.  I still did a fairly good job of posting some of my most memorable moments while there.

On this day, I decided I would take a walk around Ubud.  I didn’t need no stinking car.  Of course it was darn hot out, so I got an umbrella from the registration desk and set off for an on foot sightseeing adventure.  Plus I needed to keep it moving since I really couldn’t do any running at the time.  I am so glad I did.  It was very sunny despite the rain clouds in the sky.  I had decided that I would do the flesh-eating fish pedicure today, but I chickened out.  I know if I had a buddy with me I would have. I just couldn’t do it.  So that item remains on my list of things I wanted to do in Bali.

Another holiday away from home.  I am never thrilled about that.   I really miss being home for the holidays, but I sure was not complaining when I was hanging out at the pool, leisurely reading my book & sipping on whatever was cold at the time. It is probably better that I was not, because  I most assuredly would have been stuffing my face.  You know Thanksgiving dinner is like Sunday dinner on steroids.  :) Oh well, there was still my superman sighting.  That made it special.

Well I will tell the rest of the story though my pics for the day.  Enjoy.  More to come on a later post.  Yes there is more.  :) Don’t forget to tell me what you think & thanks for joining me on my journey.

I must have walked about 7 miles today.  My walk was draining and I was tired when I got back to my room.  I ended the day by watching a couple of episodes of Super Natural TV show and crashed.
